SWR Member Interview: Where will the South African wine industry be in 2030?

By Hanna Halmari

In this Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) Member Interview podcast Tom Owtram talks with Johan Reyneke, owner and winemaker of Reyneke Wines.

Johan Reyneke

Since the early 1990’s, Johan has been a pioneer in biodynamics and is now globally recognised for his sustainable approach to viticulture and winemaking.

Situated in the Polkadraai Hills just outside of Stellenbosch, Tom and Johan discuss the challenges of certification, the definition and benefits of regenerative farming, how Reyneke Wines is taking action to address the sustainability of their packaging, the importance of social sustainability, and the need for greater collaboration between different wine regions. They conclude by looking ahead to 2030 and Johan shares his thoughts on the challenges for the South African wine industry and where he hopes the industry will be.

This episode is part of our ‘SWR Member Interview’ podcast series. Each episode will feature a different guest speaker from the SWR in which we’ll highlight the latest news, innovations and developments of this member’s sustainability journey and their involvement in the SWR.
