Sustainable Wine’s Toby Webb speaks to Miguel Torres, fourth generation of the Torres family and president of Bodegas Torres in Penedès.

They discuss the impacts of climate change in Catalonia, the adaptation and mitigation efforts at Bodegas Torres, what the future of climate leadership in the industry looks like, and more.

The conversation took place at the Torres vineyards and winery at Penedes, in Southern Catalonia, in September 2021.

This is the Torres climate change vineyard, where in-depth expermentation into rehabiltating forgotten local grape varieties, which could provide climate adaptation benefits, takes place

Torres have as much, if not more than any vineyard and winery in the world, on operational sustaianability. From Co2 capture to electric vehicles, biochar and renewable energy, the Torres group also experiments with both solar in the vineyards and experiments with vine training, canopy management and cover cropping for climate adaptation purposes

Here they capture CO2 for fermentation for use in tanks rather than release into the atmosphere
